The best ab exercise is what most people are looking for when searching for an effective workout. After doing a lot of research and finding a variety of exercise to try, most people are unable to narrow it down to just one technique.

Some techniques make people feel better yet do very little as far as health benefits go. This leaves people asking the question “is there a best abdominal exercise?” That’s the question that this article is aiming to answer.

The best abdominal exercise often varies from person to person and can be found by trying out different techniques on a firsthand basis.

While for one person crunches may be best other people may not get any results from doing crunches at all. Because of this, the choice of abdominal exercises should be something done on an individual basis after searching different options and trying them.

Finding the best abdominal exercise isn’t something as simple as picking up a book and being plunged the right direction.

There are many things to be considered when looking for the perfect abdominal workout. One important thing to consider well determining the best exercise for you is considering your personal preferences.

There are several different types of abdominal exercise available to choose from. Crunches are very popular, as are ball exercises, bicycle maneuver, captain’s chair and leg lifts are among hundreds of other abdominal exercises.

Each of these different exercises can be done in many different ways. It is perhaps the technique used that makes or breaks the exercise.

There are more complicated exercises and overly simplified exercises that can be done as well. Whenever type of abdominal exercise will help you to do an exercise routine on a regular basis is going to be the best abdominal exercise for you.

Whichever type of exercise you choose to pursue it is important to remember that your physical well being is what’s important. Overdoing any type of exercise is bad.

Keeping safety in mind, any exercise that meets your physical, emotional and mental requirements is what you should consider the best ab exercise.

Inhale slowly, then twist to the right, bringing your left elbow towards your right knee, with the right leg extended. Then, inhale and return to position. Repeat this on the other side, in sets of five.

The Hundred – This Pilates abdominal exercise starts out lying on your back. Bring your knees up to your chest, and place your arms at your sides. Then, life your chest and chin a little as you bring your legs up.

Bring your arms up around six inches from the floor, and pump them quickly up and down as you exhale. Pump them again and inhale. This exercise is popularly done in repetitions of ten.

One of the most common areas that people focus on when doing abdominal training is the upper abdominal muscles.

There are a number of different exercises that you can do if you’d like to strengthen and tone your abs. After doing upper abdominal exercise for just a little while, you’ll probably experience a visible change in your appearance, and feel stronger, too.

Of course, everyone’s body is different, so your experience won’t be exactly like that of anyone else. If you’d like to try strengthening these important muscles, give the basics of upper abdominal exercise a try. Here’s a few notable options to get you started.

Swiss Ball Crunch – This exercise is great if you’d like to get that perfect six pack. You start by sitting on the Swiss ball, feet about shoulder width apart.

Move your right foot, following it with your left, and lean back so that your hips and shoulders touch the Swiss Ball. Place your hands at the back of your head, then contract your abdomen.

You can do this just by curling your shoulders in the direction of your hips. Hold this pose for two counts before exhaling. Then, hold the contraction again at the top for two more counts before you return to your original position.

Situp – this is a familiar exercise recommended for beginners. You don’t need any special equipment to perform this upper abdominal exercise.

In fact, you can do a situp in many of the same steps as an ordinary crunch. You don’t have to start out with a full version of the exercise, though. Pick where you place your arms and hands depending on your abdominal strength.

The closer your hands are to your head, the harder your situp will be to perform. If you’re just getting started, do these exercises with your hands at your side. You can also cross your arms behind your head, or over your chest.

Then, sit up to at least a forty five degree angle. You may feel some pulling in your hip flexors, but there’s no contraction in these muscles.

Curls – These start out by lying flat on your back on a hard surface like the floor. This upper abdominal exercise is a great way to get well shaped, tone abdominal muscles. Bend your legs slightly when you lie down, with your feet together.

Put your hands at your sides, and slide them near the ground, in the direction of your feet. This lifts your torso, so slide as far as you can.

You’ll feel your upper abdominal muscles contract. Try to hold the contraction for at least two seconds, even if it is mildly uncomfortable. If you can’t hold it that long, work your way up.

These upper abdominal exercises are taught in a number of locations, including fitness programs and classes run by experts. You can also try them at home, if you don’t care to go to the gym.

The abdomen is made up of a number of muscles and muscle groups, each with its own role. The muscles of the lower abdomen have been called the hardest to develop and shape.

Because of this there are a number of specialized lower ab exercises to help people get the sexiest, strongest abs that they can. Many lower abdominal exercises have been created specially by experts in fitness for the development of a great six pack.

Of course, if you just use lower abdominal exercises by themselves, you won’t see a huge difference. You’ll also need a healthy lifestyle, the right diet, and to exercise other muscles as well.

If you can, try using lower abdominal exercises in addition to other activities, including cycling, swimming, jogging, or just taking a walk. Here are some of the most powerful, effective exercises that you can use on your lower abdominal muscles.

Side Crunches – This is a lower abdominal exercise you can do by first lying down on your back. Then, bend your knees and twist your waist, so that your legs lie one on top of the other, to one side of your body.

Make sure that your shoulder blades lie flat and evenly on the ground. Once you’ve got the right position, breathe out, then lift the upper part of your body off of the floor.

This will cause the oblique abdominal muscles to contract. For the best results, do this exercise focusing on alternate sides of the body, so that development of the lower abdominals is symmetrical.

Reverse Crunches – This is another popular lower abdominal exercise. Start out by lying on your back on a firm surface like the floor. Then, put your hands at your sides and raise your legs directly upwards.

Bend your knees, and exhale. Then, curl up the lower part of your body, moving towards the chest. Inhale, allowing your legs to return to where they started. This lower abdominal exercise squeezes the abdomen. To get the best results, repeat this exercise multiple times.

Lying Scissors – Once again, start the exercise by lying down on your back. Make sure that your palms are against the floor under your lower back.

Then, stretch out your legs and raise them alternately, exhaling as you do. Make sure that there’s a slight bend at the knee. As you lower your legs, inhale. Repeating this exercise can help tone the lower abdomen.

One of the great things about the lower abdominal exercises mentioned here is that you can do them even at home. There’s no special equipment required to get a great workout.

Start by pulling in your belly button. It should feel as though you’re trying to make it touch your spine. Tuck your tummy in while exhaling. For the best results, keep this position for a few seconds before relaxing.

Eight to ten repetitions of this exercise is common. Even if it doesn’t seem complicated enough to be a “real” exercise, this tummy tucking maneuver can help strengthen your abs during pregnancy.

Another good exercise that you can do in early stages of pregnancy starts out with lying on your stomach on a flat surface. Exhale, and lower your back, then return to your starting position. Repeat this abdominal exercise five or six times to get the full effect.

If you’d like a tougher abdominal workout, try a few side crunches. You start out lying on your right side. Bend the right leg a little while you stretch your right arm out to the front.

Place your left arm behind your head. Then, bend your left knee, bringing your head and left elbow towards the knee. To get the full effect of this exercise, be sure that your elbow and knee meet.

However, don’t be worried if you can’t do this, particularly in late pregnancy. Then, switch to the other side, and repeat. Fifteen to twenty repetitions is common for this abdominal exercise during pregnancy.

There are plenty of other exercises you can do while you’re pregnant that will help keep you in shape. Be sure you’re in good condition, and consult your doctor beforehand, however.

If you’re in the third trimester, you should reduce your number of repetitions, as well as if you’re feeling sore or tired.
